State Fair Stories:
the Days and People of the New York State Fair
The New York
State Fair, which began in 1840 and which was made permanent in Onondaga
County in 1890, is a mainstay of our Central New York life.
Everyone has a
story to tell that has taken place at the New York State Fairgrounds – of
events, people, traditions, friendships, romances, buildings, competitions,
weather conditions, foods, activities, performances, wild rides, races,
ceremonies, entertainment, a favorite State Fair tradition or “must-do”.
There are memories from other events that take place on the fairgrounds at
other times of the year, such as youth ice skating at the coliseum, antiques
events, stage performances, cat shows, competitions, microd races and car
shows, etc.
The stories in
this book, from over 100 people, are the memories of many of those events
and times. Interspersed in the chapters are pieces of history and many
photos. This book also has a Names Index of contributors and named
persons.
